The James D. Wilson Foundation
Mission
The James D. Wilson Foundation exists to preserve visual history, support education, activate archives, and create opportunities ensuring historically significant stories remain accessible for future generations.
Vision
The Foundation carries Wilson's lifelong work forward — the educator, the mentor, the institution builder — by transforming a private archive into a public resource for scholarship, exhibition, and inspiration.
Future Programs
Archive Digitization + Preservation
Student Photography Programs
Scholarships + Mentorship
Traveling Educational Exhibitions
Community Storytelling Projects
Research Access for Historians
Co-Founders + Board
Led by Michelle B. Wilson — daughter of James D. Wilson and steward of the archive — the Foundation is assembling co-founders, board members, and advisors committed to preservation, education, and cultural history.
Educational Initiatives
James D. Wilson taught humanities, drawing, photography, and visual arts. He lectured on Africentric approaches to photography and mentored multiple generations. The Foundation's educational initiatives continue that classroom — bringing the archive into schools, universities, and community programs.
Partnerships
Museums, universities, grant organizations, and preservation partners are invited to build alongside the Foundation.
